Square 1

Each month I will take a video of my attempt to dunk a basketball. Hopefully, by my 12th video or sooner, I will achieve what so few white boys have - flight.

I took my camera to the gym today for a trial. While I had visions of cutting a mix tape with rap tunes like T.I. and Jay-Z's Bring Em Out rocking and slow motion video with R.Kelly's I Believe I Can Fly blaring in the background, those will have to wait. I think it is important I include the raw unedited tapes so you can see exactly what the video captures. I took a couple takes, and after trying to decide what to include, I think I just need to post them all.

Even if I am destined to be the next Star Wars Kid on YouTube, I believe one thing - everyone who looks at these videos and reads this blog has a common connection - everyone wants to see me dunk. So I include these videos as a support group tool, open for suggestions and comments. Also, in my first and second dunk attempt takes I tried to dunk it: 1 foot - 1 handed, 1 foot - 2 handed, 2 feet - 1 handed, 2 feet - 2 handed.

There are two things I can immediately take away from these videos:

1. I can't dunk.

and

2. Over the next year, it is going to take a Herculean effort.

Also, as part of my monthly video updates, I am going to honor a different dunking legend by attempting a dunk made famous by that legend.

  1. After reviewing the tape, I come to the conclusion that you may have a little ways to go.

I do have at least one suggestion: Try going from the left side and dunk on the front side of the rim. Even start with a finger roll and try to grab the rim.

I would also like to see video of how high you are getting without the ball.

I came in with high hopes, but after seeing the first video excerpts (I won't sugar coat), I am losing hope fast.

    Keep Jumpin

  2. Like Russ, I have reviewed the tapes. My conclusion is different than Russ' though...I think you have a LONG way to go. My suggestion would be, practice jumping first, then start worrying about getting the ball to the hoop.

That said, never quit posting these videos. I love them.
